Abstract

542,477. Flexible joints LAYCOCK ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CHARLESWORTH, T. R. Sept. 21, 1940, No. 14437. [Class 80 (ii)] A coupling between one end of a propellor or like shaft 4 and a universal joint 6, 7, comprises the combination of (1) a telescopic joint freely permitting both relative axial and rotary movements of the coupled parts and maintaining them in alignment, and (2) a flexible joint which permits to a limited extent and cushions such relative movements. As shown, the telescopic joint comprises a spigot 9 freely engaging a bore in a socket 8 fixed to the part 7 of the universal joint. The socket 8 and shaft 4 have radial arms 17 carrying axial pins 18, the latter fitting into rubber bushes 22 carried by a floating member 20. The latter may be of the type described in Specification 387,178. One end of the bore in the socket 8 may be closed by a cap 23 formed with an air hole, and the other end by a flexible sleeve 24.
