Abstract

3514. Bambridge, W. G. Feb. 12. [Addition to 6263/08.] Universal joints.-A universal joint consists of a shaft or spindle 2 having ball or socket members and engaging corresponding socket or ball members on the adjacent ends of the connected shafts. Pins 7 projecting from the ball members enter diametrically opposite longitudinal closed slots 8 in the socket members, the slots being surrounded by sleeves or collars 9. The pins preferably pass right through the ball members; they may be formed in two cylindrical, tapered, or shouldered sections secured together by an axial screw 10 and cotter 11 ; or the screw 10 may be formed integrally with one part of the pin. A two-part retaining-collar 12 and locking-ring 13 may be affixed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 6169/08.
