Abstract

861,600. Universal joints. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. June 13, 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 19233/57. Class 80 (2). A torsionally-rigid universal joint for coupling a tachometer generator to a motor in a servo feed-back system or the like, with approximately coaxial shafts, comprises blocks 21, 22, 23 of resilient metal or plastic, the outer, 21, 23 of which are connected to the shafts S1, S2 and are coupled to the central block 22 by one or more strips 24 ... 27 of resilient material which are bent through 180 degrees about axes perpendicular to and spaced from the common shaft axis, the axes about which the strips 24, 25 are bent being perpendicular to the axes of the bent strips 26, 27. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the joint is formed from a sheet of beryllium copper in the form of a right-angled cross, each arm of which has a circular hole near its end. Opposite arms are bent through 180 degrees so that their ends overlap in a plane parallel to the original sheet, with their holes in alignment. The overlapping ends are secured to brass blocks having a central bored spigot which is peened over the holes and receives the shaft.
