816,157. Pipe couplings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 12, 1957 [June 14, 1956], No. 18382/56. Class 99(1). In a flexible pipe coupling a pair of members 1, 2 are disposed adjacent one another in a common plane so as to extend transversely of and within the coupling substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the coupling and to constitute at their adjacent edges a pivotal bearing along the axis of bending of the coupling, the members being supported respectively from the inner walls of the pipes 4, 5 in such a way that either member is positioned between the other member and the pipe from which the latter member is supported thereby ensuring that the adjacent pivoting edges of the members tend to be drawn together and maintained in sufficiently close juxtaposition along or substantially along the axis of bending of the coupling during relative angular displacement between the pipes. A flexible adapter 10, e.g. a bellows, joins the pipes and encloses the members and the supporting means 6, 7 thereof. As shown, the strips or plates 1, 2 have bearing pieces 12, 13 provided with curved, coacting faces and are supported by V-shaped supports 6, 7 reinforced by crossplates 8, 9 and welded to the pipes 4, 5. To control the limit of separation of the pivotal edges of the strips in the no-load position of the pipes a check frame is fitted over the strips, or plates 11 which may be integral with the plates 8, 9 are secured to the limbs of some or all of the two sets of supports 6, 7; Alternatively, the strips 1, 2 are spring loaded.
