Abstract
806,266. Pipe joints; articulated pipes. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 27, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6228/56. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). In a plant which includes a closed conduit 3 wherein there is an absence of coincidence in a single plane of the expansions and/or contractions of the parts of the conduit, the latter is provided with three, spaced, flexible joints X, Y, Z each connecting two adjacent parts of the conduit and being provided with constraining means arranged to determine the relative spacing of the adjacent ends of the two parts and each permitting relative movements of the parts of the conduit which it connects only in a plane normal to a hinge axis of the joint. The hinge axes of the three joints are parallel but not all coplanar and these axes are all normal to a single plane containing the vector sum BC of the expansions and/or contractions. As shown, the condiuit 3 conveys steam from a steam generator 1 to a turbine 2, fixed relatively to the generator 1, and is fixed at the points A and B respectively ; the corner junctions between adjacent lengths 10 . . . 15 of the conduit are rigid. Each joint comprises a flexible, corrugated element 26 connecting pipes 20, 21 to which are secured diametrically opposed pairs of plates 23, 24 linked together by hinge pins 25, the common axis of the pins intersecting the axial centre lines of the pipes ; the constraining means are in the form of a plate-like spacer diametrically disposed within the joint. In a modification, wherein the turbine 2 is liable to lateral or vertical movement, the hinge axes of the joints are all normal to a single plane containing the vector sum of the expansions and/or contractions and either containing or parallel to a further vector representing that movement.
