[Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] In a lock in which the bolt is retracted by the inward sliding of a key barrel, the inward movement is prevented only by the tumblers and rotation of the barrel is not necessary. In the embodiment described, the barrel may be rotated and retained in a position in which sliding of the barrel is not prevented. It is adapted for the lid of a chest which carries a depending staple 25 for engagement by a hook bolt 20 pivoted at 21, the lower end of the bolt being engaged by the end of the lock-barrel 12 ; the bolt is cut and bent out of thick sheet metal, and is pivoted by lateral extensions 21 carrying sleeves 22 which engage in notches in the side walls of the lock casing 13 and are held in the notches by the back plate of the casing. The locking-mechanism comprises spring-pressed sliding tumblers 33 in the barrel, actuated by a non-rotating key and normally engaging a slot 35 in the casing, inward sliding of the barrel being prevented by an end wall 40 of the slot and withdrawal by a retaining member 38. When the tumblers 33 are retracted, as in Fig. 5, the barrel can be pushed in to actuate the bolt 20, and it can be rotated so that the detents may, when the key is withdrawn, engage a second slot 46 which has no end wall, the device being then merely a push-button-operated hook fastening ; the rotation of the barrel 12 is limited by an eccentric lug 47 on its end engaging suitably arranged surfaces on the lower end of the bolt 20. Slots in the lock-barrel opposite the slots 35, 46 are provided to allow necessary movement of the tumblers 33 during insertion and withdrawal of the key.
