Abstract
405,488. Locks. CAMPANILE, J. A., 497, Almafuerte Street, Ensenada, and ACOSTA, J. D. M. DE, 46, Reconquista Street, both in Buenos Aires. April 13, 1933, No. 11102. [Class 44.] A lock having means to tear a card as it is being unlocked, is provided with two keys, the shorter of which will unfasten only a cover plate to allow inspection of the card, while the longer one will, after operation of a subsidiary catch concealed by the cover plate, unlock the lock and the holder for the card to allow of its replacement. The invention is shown as applied to a padlock for doors, ballot-boxes and the like, but may be applied to other locks. The lock mechanism is mounted in a block B and comprises a two-part revolving barrel 13<1>, 13<11> having spring-pressed pin tumblers 14, 15. The cover plato 51 is connected by a spring hinge 62 to the frame 50 for holding the card 32 and is secured by a hook 39 engaging with an aperture in a spring-pressed sliding latch 33. To release the cover plate 51 so that the card may be viewed through a glass window 56, either key is inserted into the lock and given a half-turn counterclockwise and is then pushed further into the lock so that a shoulder 40 on the key presses back the latch 33. To allow of this sliding motion of the key, the bits 45 of the key which engage with the tumblers 14 are made longer than the width of the tumblers. The shackle 4 is locked by a spring-pressed sliding bolt 11 which engages with notches 10 in its legs 3 and 6. To withdraw the bolt 11, the long key, Fig. 3, after being operated to release the cover plate 51, is turned clockwise to engage a toothed sector 19 on the barrel part 13<11> with a rack on a spring-pressed sliding member 21 which is coupled with the bolt 11 by a projection 28 engaging a slot 30. When the bolt 11 is withdrawn, the leg 6 of the shackle is ejected from the casing by a spring 9, a pin 8 limiting the outward movement, and the shackle may then be rotated about its other leg 3 which engages with the tail of the bolt 11 to hold it withdrawn until the shackle is pressed home. Before the bolt 11 can be withdrawn by the key, a subsidiary pivoted catch 66 has to be disengaged from a notch 69 in the member 21 by means of a finger lever 68 which is normally concealed by the cover plate 51. The catch 66 allows the member 21 limited movement so that if an attempt is made to unlock the lock without withdrawing the catch, a projection 31 on the member 21 tears the card 32. The card 32 is held between a plate 49 and the pivoted frame 50 which is held in position by the engagement of the shackle 4 with a flange 57. To allow the frame 50 to be moved away from the plate 49 so that the card may be changed, the shackle must be rotated to the position shown dotted in Fig. 8 so as to align the notch 10 with a semi-circular recess in the flange 57. The plate 49, block B and casing A are secured together by screws co-operating with pins 46 on the casing which project through holes in the block B. In a mortice or rim lock, the bolt 11 or the member 21 may be the lock bolt proper and the revolving barrel may be arranged to extend through the thickness of the block B.
