To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUS Kerrie, a citizen of the Republic, of Czechoslovakia, residing at Budweis, Czechoslovakia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks of the type in which the bolt is provided on both sides with key-engaging members and the tumblers are symmetrical andby setting their springs, can be set so as to lie in the path of one or other of the key-engaging members The invention has for its object to provide such a lock for actuating its bolt by the lug engaging member on one of its sides with a safety doorknob key, which can only be inserted in the lock and withdrawn from the same by a peculiar setting of the key provided for engaging the key-engaging member on the other side of the bolt-and'capable of being withdrawn from the lock in the usual manner, but which door-knob key cannot otherwise be withdrawn from the lock with the bolt in its normal positions. NVith such an arrangement only the owner of the lock need have a key, while the look may be actuated by means of the non-removable door-knob key, thus preventing any unauthorized tampering with the key. The lock is suitable for use as a safety lock for doors, to the inner side of whichit is fixed, the lock being capable of being operated from the outside of the door by means of the on dinary removable key, but from within with the peculiar door-knob key.
In the accompanying drawings one constructional example of the lock is shown, the tumblers of a known kind, which are spring pressed and act on both key-engaging 1nemhers, not being shown.

I c In the lock the bolt 1 with the key-engaging members 2, 3 at either side of it and the bolt pin l which is acted onby the tumblers not shown in the drawing are all known parts. It has also already been proposed that only the keyto be introduced from the outside of the door shall coact with the keyengaging member 2, the tumblers being at the same time so displaced that, when the bolt is in the locked position, it is impossible for the key-engaging member 3 to be acted on from the inside of the door. This keyengaging member 3 can be actuated by a key to be introduced into the lock from the inside of the door.
The object of the present invention is to provide inplace of this latter key, which hitherto was capable of being introduced into and withdrawn from the lock in the ordinary way, a safety door-knob key, which with the locking members in their normal position cannot be removed from the lock.
The invention consists substantially in this, that on the bolt 1 a pin 25 is provided, which engages in a slot 6 of atwo armed auxiliary bolt 7 which is pivotally mounted in the lock. This auxiliary bolt is provided with a recess 8, the edges of which, when the bolt 1 is in its normal position, partially withdrawal of the cover the inside of the key-hole 10 in the plate 9 of the lock.
Owing to the tact that the auxiliary bolt 7 is operatively connected to the bolt 1, the
key-hole 10 in the lock plate 9 remains covered in the manner stated, both when the lolt 1 is in the locked position and when it is in the unlocked position. In order to enable the door-knob key 11 to'be intros duced into the lock and withdrawn from the same from the inside of the door, the owner who has charge of the outer key 5 must bring the auxiliary bolt/T into the position shown in Figure 4 by moving the bolt 1, for
instance halfway, in which position the edges of the recess 8 no longer obstruct the key-hole 9. lVith the locking parts in this position the door-knob key 11 can be introduced into the lock and, when the key 5 has moved the bolt 1 in returning to its initial position the door-knob key 11 can no longer be withdrawn from the lock.
In the example shown the unsupported end of the auxiliary bolt is bent over in the shape of a U, the recess 8 being in the short limb 13, which, when the locking parts are in the normal position, prevents the bit of the door-knob key 11 being withdrawn from the lock or inserted therein (Figure 2).
The invention also relates to the peculiar manner of attaching the lock to the door.
The inner plate 14 of the lock is fixed di rectly to the door by means of screws. The outer plate 9 of the lock is connected to the plate 141 of the lock by means of the screws 15. I
The plate 9 of the lock is provided with slot-s 16 and with internally threaded holes 17 at'either side of key-hole 10. The casing of the lock consists of a plate 18 with turned over edges 19. On the inside of the plate 18 are pins 20 corresponding to the slots 16. One of the turned over edges 19 has a cut-awaypart 21 for the end of the bolt 1, which projects beyond the plates 9 and 14: when in the open position, and for guiding the said bolt. I
The casing of the lock is placed on the lock plates in such a manner that the pins 20 lie in one end of the slots 16. In this position the bolt 1 is opposite the cut-away part 21 in the bent over sides of'the casing. By sliding the casing to the right (Figure 5) the end of the bolt 1 willenter the cut- :iwaypart-Ql of the bent over sides of the casing and, when the casing has reached the extreme position determined by the length of the slots 16 the key-hole 22 in the same will coincide with the key-hole 10 in the plate 9 of the lock (Figures 2 and 5). In thisposition the holes 23 for the heads of screwswillbeopposite the screw holes 17in the plate9, so that the-casing can be screwed to the plate 9 of the lock.
lVhen thebolt 1 is in its normal position, one edge of the recess 8 in the auxiliary bolt 7 will thus also partially cover the key-hole from the inside. On the auxiliary bolt 7 being'partly thrown over in the manner described above and'the door-knob key 11 being introduced into the lock, the flange 21- of the door-knob key will also cover the screws'inserted in the holes 23, 17, all the means for fixing the lock to the door thus being covered.
For removing the lock the door-knob key must-first be withdrawn from the lock in the manner-described above.
What I claim is:
1. A lock comprising in combination a bolt, key-engaging means on either side of the said bolt, a front lock plate, a key hole in the said front lock plate, which is intended to co-operate with the key-engaging means on one side of the bolt, an auxiliary bolt capable of partially covering the key hole in the front lock plate from the inside of the look when the bolt is in the open and locked positions, a back lock plate, a key hole in the said back lock plate intended to receive a key capable of co-operating with the key-engaging means on one side of the bolt and a door-knob key in the key hole in the front lock plate and capable of co-operating with the key-engaging means on the other side of the bolt and means for connecting the bolt and the auxiliary bolt in such a manner that, when the bolt is brought into an intermediate position between the open and the locked position by turning the key in the key hole in the back plate, the auxiliary bolt is so displaced as no longer to obstruct the key hole in the front lock plate, so that'the door-knob key can be withdrawn from the look, as set forth.
2. A look comprising in combination a bolt, key-engaging means on either side of the saidbolt, a front lock plate, a key hole in the said front lock plate, which is intended to co-operate with the key engaging means on one side of the bolt, an auxiliary bolt pivoted to one of the lock plates, a slot in the auxiliary bolt, a pin 011 the bolt capable of engaging in the slot in the auxiliary bolt, a recess in the auxiliary bolt the edges of which recess are intended partially to cover the key hole in the front lock plate from the inside of the lock when the bolt is in the open and locked positions, a back lock plate, a key hole in the said back lock plate intended to receive a key capable of co operating with the key-engaging means on one side of the bolt and a door-knob key in the key hole in the front lock plate and capable of co-operating'with a key-engaging means on the other side of the bolt and means for connecting the bolt and the auxiliary bolt in such a manner that, when the bolt is brought into an intermediate position between the open and the locked position by turning the key in the key hole in the back plate, the auxiliary bolt is so dis placed as no longer to obstruct the key hole in the front lock plate, so that the doorknob key can be withdrawn from the look, as set forth.
