[Class 137] A ship ventilator also applicable to buildings &c. comprises a rectangular base with an opening 19 forming the ventilator throat, a suction band 20 surrounding it with a discharge opening at the top, a cap 26 shielding the throat and means such as dampers 40, 41 for controlling the volume of air exhausted through the throat. Louvres 24 are disposed in the discharge opening with a small vertical section to prevent wind from retarding the outflow of air. With a baffle 70 extending to the cap the louvres limit the escape of light to that reflected three times before emerging through the opening. The dampers which are hinged at their upper ends to the lower edges of the cap are operated simultaneously from a hand wheel 50 by means of racks, pinions and worm wheel. Gutters 80 spill water draining from the cap on to the base whence it flows through a gap below the band 20 to the deck. Escape hatches 82 may be provided at the ends of the structure.
