1,179,070. Converter hoods; chimneys for converters. GOTTFRIED BISCHOFF BAU KOMPLETTER GASREINIGUNGS UND WASSERRUCKUHLANLAGEN K.G. and WAAGNER-BIRO A.G. 18 Nov., 1968 [2 Dec., 1967], No. 54536/68. Headings F4B and F4J. A suction hood 4 having an open-bottomed vortex chamber 8 surrounding its lower rim 6 is provided above and spaced from the mouth 3 of a converter 1 for the collection of waste gases therefrom. As shown, an outer ring 7 of the waste gases leaving the converter and deflected by the lower rim 6 into the chamber 8, together with any entrained air from the surrounding atmosphere forms a ring vortex 12. This vortex forms a protective screen in the gap 5 surrounding the mouth of the converter thus minimizing the escape of waste gases into the surrounding atmosphere while ensuring that too much air from this atmosphere is not drawn into the converter waste gases. In an alternative form (Fig. 2, not shown) the vortex chamber 8 incorporates a curved baffle (11) for splitting the ring vortex 12 into a plurality of superimposed vortices rotating in opposite directions. The suction hood and its vortex chamber may be cooled.
