Abstract

1,129,664. Spark arresters. E. A. ROPER & CO. Ltd. 24 Nov., 1965 [25 Nov., 1964], No. 47837/64. Heading F4J. [Also in Division B1] A spark arrester wherein gases carrying solid matter from a chimney 6 enter at the side thereof and are deflected through 90 degrees in a downward direction by an inverted frustoconical baffle 14 to remove the largest particles and to pass through a water curtain running from the lower periphery of the baffle 14. The gases then pass upwards through the baffle 14 and through another water curtain formed by water deflected from a shallow conical member 18 on to an upper extension 16 of the baffle 14, the gases are then discharged to atmosphere. The baffle 14 is releasably connected at its upper end to a refractory lined casing 2 the lower end of which is tapered to form a discharge opening 12. Additional water may be supplied around the upper, periphery of the baffle which may be double skinned and water cooled. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the baffle is replaced by a cylindrical water cooled jacket (22) the water being supplied through ports (26) and discharged along the upper periphery of the jacket through ports (28) to serve as additional water at the lower water curtain.
