Abstract

A dilute aqueous solution for treating metal surfaces primarily of iron or aluminium or their alloys, comprises an acid of phosphorus, or/and chromic acid in minute quantities to give a pH value between 3 and 5 and sufficient of a nonionic surface-active wetting agent to reduce the surface tension to a value of 50 dynes/cm. Orthophosphoric acid is preferred. The wetting agent may be natural, e.g., the saponius, casein, glue, starch, agar-agar, or synthetic, and may comprise between .001 and 2.0 per cent. of the solution. Substituted polyethylene glycols are preferred, such as represented by the formula RO(C2H4O)nR1 wherein "R" stands for an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, alkyl-aryl or acyl radical containing at least 10 carbon atoms, "n" is an integer greater than 2, and "R1" stands for the said radicals or a hydrogen atom. Metal surfaces are rinsed with the said solution desirably heated to near the boiling point, before applying a protective coating. Specification 284,778, [Class 82 (ii)], is referred to.
