Abstract
588,756. Shaft couplings, UNITED STEEL COMPANIES, Ltd, and COY, E. R. March 23, 1945, No. 7434. [Class 80 (ii)] In a shaft coupling having an internally splined sleeve 6 which is slid to engage splined ends 7 on both the shafts to be coupled, the sleeve 6 is retained in the coupled position by a splined locking element 8 which is slid along one splined shaft end to a groove 11 therein where it can be partially rotated to bring its splines out of register with those of the shaft end. As shown, coupling spindles 5 between two mill rolls 1 and their driving pinions 2 are connected thereto in this manner, the locking collars 8 being retained with their splines out of register by spring-loaded cotter pins 15 inserted through corresponding diametrically opposed holes in the collar and in the flanged end 14 of the sleeve 6.
