339,453. Siemens-Schucktwerke Akt.- Ges. Nov. 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Universal couplings.-A flexible shaft coupling allowing misalignment and axial displacement comprises a helical spring 1, preferably a flat steel bar wound edgewise, secured to coupling-members 2, 3 keyed on the shafts (not shown), the members 2, 3 having annular grooves with enlarged parts in which the spring 1 binds under torque, so relieving the securing-means. Preferably both members 2, 3 comprise two parts, hubs 21, 31 and outer rings 22, 32 detachably secured thereto by keys 4 and screws 5. The rings have flanges 24, 34 defining the annular grooves, and, instead of being of L-section, may be of Z or channel section. The flat ends 11, 12 of the spring 1 are secured to the rings 22, 32 respectively by pairs of screws 7, 6 and torque-transmitting pins 9, 8. By releasing the screws 5, 6 the ring 22 may be withdrawn, as shown at 22', carrying the end 12 of the spring over the gap 10 between the hubs, to enable a driven machine to be lifted from its bed. One coupling-member only need be in two parts.
