Abstract

731,547. Shaft couplings NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Nov. 23, 1953 [Sept. 19, 1952], No. 23624/52. Class 80 (2). A shaft coupling for gas turbines &c. comprises coaxial shafts A, B carrying parts C, D having interengaging helical splines &c. C<SP>3</SP>, D<SP>3</SP>, such that the shafts can be coupled and uncoupled by relative axial displacement, each pair of adjacent splines between which tengential thrusts, due to torque, are to be transmitted being formed to provide between them spaces C2, D2 in which lie and can roll thrust transmitting members such as balls F. Three sets of helical slots C<SP>4</SP> are provided so shaped that the balls F they contain touch not only the sides of the splines C<SP>3</SP>, D3, as do the balls in the slots C<SP>2</SP>, D2, but also the outer and inner surfaces of the members C, D, whereby the shafts A, B are held concentric with each other. As shown, the balls are held in place by retaining rings G, G<SP>1</SP> on the member C, but in a modification (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), one retaining ring is secured to each of the parts C, D. According to the Provisional Specification, when both the retaining rings are mounted on the same coupling part they may be joined by bars, the assembly thus forming a ball cage.
