489,044. Universal joints. VOIGT, C. A. Jan. 26, 1937, No. 2323. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] Spaced parts of an intermediate member 10, Fig. 4, are associated with or form part of a rubber-metal unit, comprising two rubber blocks 7 and three metal plates 8, 5, 8, arranged alternately and adhesively secured together along flat faces perpendicular to the plane of the intermediate member 10, the inner plates 5 or outer plates 8 of alternate units being secured to the driving and driven shafts 1, 2 respectively. The driving torque subjects one half of the rubber blocks 7 to compression, the other to tension, whilst relative axial and /or radial displacement of the shafts subjects the blocks mainly to shear stress. As shown in Fig. 4, the outer plates 8 are integral with the intermediate member 10, and the inner plates 5 are integral with members 3, 4, secured to the respective shafts. In Figs. 1 and 2, the rubber-metal parts are formed as separate units, the inner plates 5 being bolted to shaft flanges 3, 4, whilst the outer plates 8 fit in radial recesses 13 in, and are attached by bolts 9 to, the intermediate member, which is formed of two axially spaced discs 10, having central holes to accommodate the nuts 12 which secure the flanges 3, 4 to their shafts 1, 2. The plates 5, 8 have oblique driving faces, and the free ends of the rubber blocks are relieved by notches. In the case of a coupling driving always in one direction the rubber blocks subjected to tensile stress may be thinner or thicker than those in compression.
