Abstract

586,234. Step ladders. SIMS, H. W. Sept. 20, 1944, No. 17951. [Class 20 (ii)] In folding steps of the kind in which the treads 2 form link elements of a collapsable parallel 1 i n k assembly consisting of a pair of side rails 1 and a pair of link bars 6, the side rails being pivoted at their upper ends to a pair of rear struts 10, tie bars 12 are pivoted at one end to the inside surfaces of the link bars and at their other end to a transverse member 16 secured across the rear struts in such manner that the tie bars are spaced apart from the rear struts whereby, on collapsing the steps, the side rails, link bars, tie bars and rear struts are able to take up completely overlapping positions. The bar 16 is secured to a cross strut 17. The upper cross strut 18 is placed so that it abuts against an extension of the uppermost tread when the steps are opened, to limit the outward movement of the rear struts. A diagonal tie bar 20 is provided. The treads are formed of sheet metal with flanges 3 and have a cutaway portion 9 to clear the link bars. The side rails, cross struts and rear struts are preferably shallow channel section steel pressings.
