585,649. Winches. GYRAL GEARS. Ltd.. and CALLA. W. M. Nov. as. 1944. No. 23710. [Class 78 (v)] A hoisting apparatus comprises a winch enclosed within a casing from which projects a detachable vertical tubular member carrying a pulley at its upper end over which passes the hoisting cable and a pivoted supporting means by which the whole unit may be suspended. Fig. 1 shows a_casing 1 enclosing a winch. A tube 3 is fixed tangentially to the case and-is provided with extensions 4, 5, and 6 the latter supporting a pulley 8 at its end between arms 11. A winch cable 7 with an eyelet 9 is controlled by a handle 16. When the winch is used for hoisting loads into aircraft it is suspended beneath the aircraft by an arm 14 pivoted at 13 to the arms 11 and having a ball connection 15 at its outer end. Fig. 5 shows two such winches hoisting a bomb 20 into a bomb bay of an aircraft. The load in this case swings the winches outward thus balancing the load in the cables 7. In modifications (a) the standard may be deleted and the winch used above the load and (b) the standard may be locked in a horizontal position by a pin engaging the holes 18, 19.
