583,919. Masts or derricks. MOORE & CO., Inc., L. C. June 6, 1944, No. 10867. Convention date, Jan. 10. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (iv)] A derrick for an oil well comprises a mast assembled along the ground from pre-fabricated sections 1, 2, 3 with the ends of the front legs 4, which are shorter than the rear legs 5, placed in seats 7 in a base 8, so that as the mast is swung upwards it pivots about the seats 7 until the ends of the rear legs are lowered on to the base and after these have been secured in brackets 27, the mast is swung upright lifting the ends 4 from the base. The upright mast is supported by guys or as shown by extension legs 6 which are connected to the legs 4. The ends of the legs 5 are pivoted to legs 11 of a gin pole whose other legs 12 are pivoted to a bracket 14 on the base so that when the drum 10 winds in the cable 17 to raise the mast, a sling 25 secured to the block 20 forces the legs towards the base.
