Abstract
612,654. Catch gear for lift cages. BARTON, R., and ADLER, P. May 28, 1946, No. 16263. [Class 78 (iii)] In a safety device for lift cages, of the kind in which frictional clamping devices are first actuated automatically by an arm on its release by breakage of the hoisting cable so as to cause the device to loosely grip guide ropes or rods sufficiently to retard the downward sliding of the device on the guide ropes, such devices being thereafter further automatically actuated by means connected to the cage on the descent of the cage away from the clamping devices to increase their grip relatively gradually to prevent further downward slipping of the cage, the clamping devices are actuated by screw means. The cage is suspended by chains 1 from a member 2 on the end of the hoisting cable and is guided by cables 3 which pass through blocks 5 which normally rest on the blocks 4, and each of which consists of a fixed vertical guide engaging member 6 and a horizontally movable clamping member 7, operated by one end of one of the threaded spindles 9 to each of which is mounted, by means of a ratchet- and-pawl mechanism, a weighted arm 10. Catches 1, 8 which normally engage notches 16 in the cross-member 17 on the top of the cage, are together with arms 15 solidly connected to the spindles 9, and the arms 15 are flexibly connected to the cross-member 17 by loose chains 19. On breakage of the hoisting cable, the connecting member 2 falls and allows the arms 10 to swing downwards, rotating spindles 9 which force clamping members 7 into engagement with the cables and at the same time disengage the catches 18 from the notches 16 allowing the member 17 to drop away from the blocks 5 until checked by chains 19 which now carry the whole weight of the cage, and the resultant force transmitted through the spindles 9 to the clamping members 7 finally brings the cage to rest. In a modification, guide rods are provided instead of cables.
