Abstract

178,580. Oliver, A. H., and Clarke, W. E. Jan. 25, 1921. Curtains, drawing and suspending. -Staga or other curtains are raised and lowered by ropes passing round an electrically-actuated drum, controlled by a switch in any part of the building, and a balance weight connected to a safety device is employed to balance the weight of the curtain. In the form shown in Fig. 1, th drum 7 is operated by a worm-wheel 15 from an electric motor 17, and the balance weight 9 is attached by a rope 10 to a spring-controlled drum 11 adapted to prevent the weight from falling to the ground in the event of breakage of the curtain rope 3a while permitting the weight normally to rise and fall as the curtain is lowered or raised. The weight 9 may be attached to a separate rope passing round an extension of the drum 7 instead of being attached to the end of the rope 3<a>, as shown, and the drum 7 may be tapered so that the torque on the drum is approximately constant as the curtain is raised. The rope 3<a> may bekept taut by weight attached by separate orpes to the ropes 3<a> and hanging down on the opposite sides of the pulleys 5, 6.
