Abstract
334,369. McDonald, L. R. Aug. 19, 1929. Launching. - An aeroplane is detachably suspended by cables from an elevated structure and is adapted to be swung backwardly and upwardly about the anchorage of the cables as a pivot and to be released to allow it to swing downwardly and forwardly, means being provided for releasing the aeroplane at or about the bottom of its swing. A cradle 8 is suspended by two pairs of cables attached to a girder connecting two towers and is provided with a carrying loop 12, Fig. 4. up to which the aeroplane is raised by a hoist 45 and to which it is secured by a hook 3C. The cradle is swung into the launching position by the cable and winch device shown in Fig. 2, to which it is connected by a hook 14, Fig. 4, adapted to be released by pulling a rope 20 which frees a keeper 17. The aeroplane is released from the cradle at the bottom of the swing either by the pilot pulling a rope 38 or automatically by the tensioning of a rope 39, secured to a cleat 41, which after effecting the release of the aeroplane is freed therefrom by the parting of a belleerd coupling 44. Hoisting and slinging attachments for aircraft. -The hook 30, Fig. 4, is pivoted at 31 to a frame element 32 attached to the fuselage, being counterbalanced by a weight 38 and secured by a keeper 34 pivoted to the framework at 35 and adapted to be tripped by either of the ropes 38 or 39.
