794,407. Aircraft arresting gear. BORGS FABRIKS AKTIEBOLAG. Oct. 25, 1956, No. 32577/56. Class 4. Arresting gear for aircraft on a runway or other landing surface comprises laterally spaced pillars 9, 12 each mounted on a base frame 16 for pivotal movement transverse of the runway and each provided with a pulley 8, 11 respectively for a support cable 3, 4. Each cable is secured by a readily releasable connection 6 to an arresting cable 2 which carries a slack lower cable 5, the cables 2 and 5 being connected by vertical cables 1. The outer end of cable 3 is anchored at 10 to the runway and the outer end of cable 4 is secured to a weight 13 which tensions cables 3 and 4 and the intermediate portion of cable 2. During operation, when an aircraft runs into the net, the resulting tension imposed on cables 2, 3 and 4 separates connections 6 and a braking device 7, to which one end of cable 2 is secured, exerts a steady braking force on the aircraft. The cable 2 may be rewound by a power or manually operated device 25. To enable the net to be lowered on to the runway when necessary, manually operated catches are freed to enable the pillar 9 and 12 to swing towards one another into substantially horizontal positions, though they may swing outwardly or both in one lateral direction or the other. The pillars are counterweighted.
