An aircraft arresting barrier supported by poles 8 each side of the runway comprises a plurality of net elements, Fig. 1, each composed of two horizontal ropes or the like, 1, 2, interconnected by spaced apart vertical ropes or the like 3, the net elements being juxtaposed to form a compound net, Fig. 4. Each net element is connected by cables 4, 5, to brake means 6, 7, and by cables 9, 10, to the posts 8. In Fig. 4 there are twenty-four net elements, so disposed that the vertical ropes form groups of six, four consecutive groups being formed by one rope from each net. The ropes in a group are spaced by a few centimetres, and groups by one and a quarter metres. The lower horizontal ropes are connected to the runway at places 35 by breakable means. The vertical ropes are intended to engage the aircraft wings, but should any vertical rope engage a protruding part, say the aircraft nose, breakable connections 13, 14, Fig. 1, release loops 11, 12 in the horizontal ropes of that vertical rope to enable the net element to be drawn forward freely by the aircraft nose, while leaving the remaining net elements in their normal position for wing engagement. The vertical ropes are preferably slack.
