Aircraft arresting gear comprises a net made of two horizontal supporting wires 4, 5 spaced apart vertically and interconnected by vertically extending ropes 6, the net being suspended between two masts 2, 3, which may be arranged to be raised and lowered, the vertical ropes being of an extensible material such as nylon, and being protected against severence by the sharp leading edge of an aircraft wing, by having intervening portions 8 of a flexible, severance resisting material such as stainless steel, or by having a sheath of braided metal wire, which sheath does not interfere with the extensibility of the ropes.
