Abstract

746,593. Parachutes. M.L. AVIATION CO, Ltd. Oct. 30, 1953 [Nov. 13, 1952], No. 28664/52. Class 4. Equipment for lowering an airman, part of an aircraft, or other heavy object from an aircraft at a high altitude comprises a number of parachutes attached at intervals along the length of a flexible line, which open in succession so as to impose the drag in a number of substantially equal stages and to provide a tail-like stabilizing effect during descent. The parachute assembly comprises a continuous flexible line 2 secured at one end to an airman's harness or an article to be dropped and at its other end to the rigging lines of a spring-opened parachute 9. The rigging lines 11 of a plurality of small parachutes 1 of equal size are secured in spaced relationship to the line 2, each parachute being formed with a vent 3 for the passage of the line 2. The parachutes collectively have sufficient drag to retard the descent of the article dropped and they are housed in a container 8 with the line 2 secured by rupturable connections 12 whereby the parachute 9, when released, withdraws the remaining parachutes in succession. All except the first two parachutes are formed on one side with inelastic rigging lines and on tho other with elastic lines so that if the drag on an individual parachute becomes excessive it may tilt and spill air. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the cord 2 may be flexible wire. Specification 699,290 is referred to.
