Abstract
538,395. Aerial warfare. McCANN, J. F. L. Oct. 5, 1939, No. 27245. [Class 9 (ii)] An aerial entanglement or trap U, Fig. 2, for hostile aircraft carries one or more arresting parachutes A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> normally kept folded and only opened when pulled by the entangled aircraft. The trap unit includes a loop L of cord or the like to envelop the aircraft the pull of which may cause the parachutes to open successively as shown in Figs. 5 and 7. The units may include auxiliary nets, N, Fig. 3, barbs D, suction cups F<SP>1</SP> or adhesives F<SP>2</SP> to grip the aircraft. Any number of such units may be combined into a mat M' for suspension by supporting parachutes P, Fig. 12, or by barrage balloons B and kites K, Fig. 13, whether anchored to the ground or towed by ships. The mats may be trailed by defending aircraft or released from the same into the path of the hostile craft. Specifications 506,773 and 529,623 are referred to.
