Abstract

578,440. Arresting aircraft. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd. (formerly PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd.), and MILES, G. H. April 15, 1943, No. 6066. [Class 4] Means for arresting aircraft at landing, particularly on a ship's deck, comprises a net or a plurality of ropes which is or are resiliently supported and into which the aircraft may be flown or run. As shown, a pair of nets 1 spaced to permit entry between them of the forward part of the aircraft 6 are supported by cables 13, 15 which pass through the deck of a ship to springs or other shock-absorbers, the cables 13 first passing through poles 2 hinged at 3 to the deck. 'The poles are supported by members 7, 10 and the members 10 may be connected to shockabsorbers. Rigid or compressible struts 12 for the poles may also be provided. The nets are thus arranged to be engaged by the wings of the aircraft. In a modification, there is no opening in the net device and the aircraft is provided with one or more skids which project forwardly so as to protect the airscrew from entanglement with the net. The feet of the poles may be resiliently mounted so as to yield laterally: The poles with the net may be stowed parallel to and adjacent the deck when not required. According to the Provisional Specification, wires stretched across the deck for engagement by a hook device carried by the aircraft may be provided in addition to the net.
