Abstract

557,107. Lowering apparatus. MORRISON, J. L. April 28, 1942, No. 5670. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v)] Means for dismantling and lowering thwarts or staging 1 suspended in a ship's hold by hangers 3 or other means from deck beams 4 comprise bolts 10 for temporarily suspending the thwarts, the bolts being secured against accidental removal by split pins 14 which can be withdrawn by a remote-control cord 15 when the staging has been lowered and it is desired to withdraw the bolts. The bolts 10 are inserted in existing holes 6 in the deck beams which they fit loosely and are formed with eyes 12 to act as guides for ropes 9 which are secured at 9a and 9b to the hangers 3 and thwarts 1. The weight of the thwarts is then taken by men hauling on the free ends of the ropes 9, the hangers 3 are unbolted at 5 from the deck beams by a person or persons on the thwarts, and the latter are then lowered to the bottom of the hold by paying out the ropes 9. Each split pin 14 is connected by a pin 16 and a link 17 to a cord 15, so that by pulling on the cord 15 the bolt 10 can be rotated through 180 degrees and the split pin withdrawn, after which the bolt 10 can be withdrawn from the hole 6 by pulling on the rope 9. Alternatively the bolt 10 can first be partly rotated by knotting one end of rope 9, drawing this knot up to the eye 12 and pulling on the rope.
