Abstract
492,127. Lifting-slings. PAINE, H. SCOTT-. Sept. 22, 1937, No. 25743. [Class 78 (iv)] A sling, more especially for lifting boats, comprises a number of closely-arranged spaced parallel ropes secured at their ends to a common rigid member engaged with the lifting-tackle. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show two slings used in combination for lifting a boat bodily. - Each sling comprises a number of ropes 12, which are spaced at intervals by detachable groove plates 24 bolted round them, and are formed with eyes at their ends for connection to triangular plates 15 by means of the bolts 17, Fig. 3. Curved spaced plates 23 are fitted at the points where the sling passes round the chine of the boat. Ropes 27 pass from the plates 15 to a common lifting-hook 39. A connecting rope 30 with a straining-device 31 and two ropes 30 lashed to bollards on the boat maintain the sling in position. Preferably two additional members 34 with spring or other resilient sections 37 pass directly from the boat to the lifting-hook between the ropes 27 and apply a graduated initial lifting effort before the ropes 27 take up the strain. All metal parts which contact with the hull are padded with rubber or the like, and bearing members 40 for the ropes 27 are fixed to or fitted detachably on the gunwale. The use of one sling for raising one end only of the boat is described.
