Abstract

583,051. Universal couplings. TRIGGS, W. W. (Schweizerische Lokomotiv-und Maschinenfabrik). May 4, 1944, No. 8448. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal coupling particularly for the individually driven axles of rail vehicles comprises one or more torsion bars 4 rotatably mounted on the wheel 2 and having crank arms 6 symmetrically disposed with respect to the axle 1 and engaging in guides 12 in the driving wheel 13 The ends of the bars 4 are supported in bearing bushings 15 and the arms 6 carry pivotally mounted slippers 11 the arrangement being that the distance between the centres of the bearings 15 is equal to the distance between the centres of the slippers 11 so that any bending stress on the bars 4 is avoided. To prevent complete breakdown of the coupling should the torsion bars break a sleeve 9 is provided around each bar with a loose claw connection 8 with the hub 7 of each arm 6 so that in the event of the bar breaking the sleeve 9 will transmit the drive. In a modification the ends of the arms 6 are pivotally connected to the driving wheel and the bearing bushings of the bars 4 are allowed a certain amount of sliding movement in guides on the wheel 2.
