Universal joints. - Driving and driven wheels, such as a motor-driven spur-wheel and track-wheel of an electric locomotive, are coupled by linkage which allows lateral, axial, and tilting movements and comprises a rock shaft carried in bearings on, say, the trackwheel, and having directly connected to it two links in driving-engagement with the spur-wheel at fixed distances from its axis. The spur-wheel 15, Fig. 1, is mounted on a quill-shaft 16 carried in bearings 17 in the spring-borne casing 13 of a twin driving-motor, and is driven by pinions 14. Pairs of links 23, which pass between the spokes of the track-wheel 10, are ball-jointed to cylindrical bearing-members 24<a>, slidable in apertures 24 in the wheel 15, and also are pivoted to duplicated shafts 21 on axes 23<a> transverse thereto. The shafts 21 turn in bearings 22 on the wheel 10, so that, by combined rotations about the joints 23b, pivots 23<a> and bearings 22, with sliding of the members 24<a>, all motions are accommodated. In place of the two shafts 21 a single diametrical yoke 21, apertured to clear the driving-axle 11, may be used. In a modification links 42, 43. Fig. 6, are integral with the floating rock shaft 40, 41 and are pivoted, as at 43a, to the wheel 15, the shafts being ball-jointed to arms 44 connected to the track-wheel 10 by further balljoints 44<b>.
