Abstract
582,847. Casting processes; cores ; moulds. STARLING, P. P., BURTON, H. H., WINDER, A. B., METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd., and ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd. Aug. 19, 1940, No. 13194. [Class 83 (i)] A core comprising a thin metal shell 2 surrounding a member 1 so as to leave a space 3 filled with lead or other low melting point metal or alloy, has the shell 2 closely adjacent to the member 1 at its lower end which is kept below the melting point of the lead &c. so that the lead which runs into the narrow space 11 solidifies and remains solid until the casting begins to solidify. Then it melts and the lead from the space 3 is discharged through the space 11 or means such as described in Specification 531,832 may be used for this purpose. The rise in temperature of this lower end may be retarded by lagging 12 or by cooling air circulated by pipes 14, 15 or both. The lead may be introduced into the space 3 as in Specification 582,846 or otherwise or may be positioned in said space as in Specification 582,163.
