Abstract

582,846. Casting processes; cores; moulds BAILEY, R. W., STARLING, P. P., BURTON, H. H., WINDER, A. B., METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd., and ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION; Ltd. April 24, 1940, Nos. 7408/40 and 6274/41. [Class 83 (i)] In casting a hollow steel or other ingot, the core comprises a shell 4 and a pillar 5, the space 6 between these being supplied with fusible metal or alloy from a cavity in the core by applying pressure to the metal in the cavity. A pot 22 charged with molten fusible metal may be lowered through the shell 4 on to a block 19 supported by a box 20 from the base 2 of the mould 1. The pillar 5 carried by its threaded part 13, screw 10 and bridge 12 is then inserted in the shell with its lower end above the level of the metal in 22 and the bridge resting on the head 3. The pillar is then lowered by rotating the screw by gearing in a box 11 and handle 15 to cause the metal displaced to rise in the shell as the steel rises in the mould. Fusible metal flowing between the shell 22 and block 19 is frozen by a blast of air 26 and the level in the shell is indicated by a pressure gauge connected to a pipe 29 connected to a small supply of compressed nitrogen or carbon-dioxide. To remove the casting the fusible metal around the block 19 may be melted by a hot blast 28. The lower end of the pillar may be preheated or insulated. In a modification, the pillar is stationary and the fusible metal is forced out of the pot 51, Fig. 2, by compressed gas supplied to a bell 52 submerged therein, the pressure, indicated on a gauge 76, being a measure of the level of the fusible metal in the space 6. The pot may also contain oil, gas, electrical or other heating means 63 and electrical heat-indicating means 77. The base 2 may contain steel splash wells 81 arranged directly below the poured streams of metal, leaden linings 82 being provided to prevent strain during cooling. The upper part of the shell 4 may be screened by a shield 9 and the lower part with a valved discharge duct. Specifications 376,405, 520,598 and 582,847 are referred to.
