Abstract

725,995. Cores. GUSZSTAHLWERK BOCHUMER VEREIN AKT.-GES. April 7, 1953 [April 7, 1952], No. 9408/53. Class 83 (1). A core for a mould for casting hollow ingots comprises a cylindrical outer wall of sheet metal and interiorly of said wall a helical tubular coil and a filling of freely running fine-grained refractory material, such as sand. The coil may be of metal and electrically energized to cause a slight heating of the melt and induce convection currents and carries a coolant such as compressed air or water or a mixture thereof. To bring about a controlled solidification of the melt from the bottom upwards the coil may be divided into individually controlled sections. Cooling is commenced with compressed air, and changed over gradually to water cooling. The outer mould may be of cast iron, or of a similar construction to the core, comprising a sheetmetal liner with a cooling coil therearound and a filling of silver sand.
