Abstract

1,157,054. Casting processes. UNITED STATES PIPE & FOUNDRY CO. 2 March, 1967 [3 March, 1966], No. 10036/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] In producing castings, particularly pipes in centrifugal casting machines, from ductile spheroidal graphite material, inoculant material such as calcium-silicon or ferro-silicon is added to the poured molten iron just before solidification and the solidification and cooling rates of the cast pipe are controlled to produce a grain structure mainly of ferrite, with a minimum of pearlite and carbide. As applied to casting pipes by the Lavaud method the inoculant may be added to the molten metal in the pouring ladle, in the pouring trough, blown in powdered form into the flow of metal from the trough to the mould, and added as a coating to the mould surface. The inoculant coating may be added on top of a refractory layer of diatomaceous silica and bentonite applied to the mould in a wet slurry. The solidification of the pipe at a controlled rate is achieved by water sprays applied in timed periods so that graphitization is substantially completed and sudden freezing does not produce the formation of carbides and too slow freezing does not allow the nucleating effect of the inoculating material to be dissipated. The cooling of the solidified pipe through the transformation range of the iron is also controlled to allow the pearlite to be eliminated and a ferrite structure produced. The cooling of the pipe may be slowed down by blowing a dry insulating blanket of material inside the pipe after solidification. The finished pipe may be annealed to further improve the ferrite structure of the material.
