Abstract

728,411. Ingot moulds. GUSSSTAHLWERK BOCHUMER VEREIN AKT.-GES. Feb. 17, 1953 [Feb. 29, 1952], No. 4424/53. Class 83(1). An ingot mould comprises an inner wall formed by a liner of thin metal sheet or tube surrounded by a layer of freely flowing granular material such as sand which fills the space between the liner and a cooling coil which may be electrically energized, the coil being in the form of a conical helix. The mould comprises a base-plate 1 and a thin metal liner 2. Sand or other granular material surrounds the liner and fills the space between the latter and cooling coils 4. An outer wall 5 encloses the parts of the mould and spacers 10, which may be electrical insulants, are provided between the coil turns. The cooling coil and liner may have the same conicity, or, that of the coil may be less than the taper of the liner so that the sand &c. has a depth which increases towards the top of the mould. Two independent cooling coils, which may carry compressed air or water or a mixture thereof, are provided and the coils may be energized to induce a current in the melt to bring about a slight movement therein and thus help in the crystallization of the ingot.
