[Class 44] A door knob 5 has a cylindrical recess which fits over and has a substantial bearing on a cylindrical boss 4 on the back plate 1. The latch spindle 3 engages a recess in the closed end of the knob and is retained by a screw 12 the tapered end of which engages a diagonal slot 15 in the spindle 3 and forces the end of the spindle against washers 16 which determine the clearance of the knob 5 from thrust-bearing surface 7. Modifications are shown in which the spindle 3 is secured to the knob 5 by nuts or screws passing through a bore in the end of the knob 1 and engaging the screw-threaded end of the spindle.
