Abstract
Rutile titanium dioxide pigments of improved brightness and tone are prepared by hydrolysing a titanium sulphate solution by a method described in Specifications 513,867 and 542,579, and incorporating with hydrous pulp prior to calcination a compound of silicon, zirconium, or thorium (or mixtures of such compounds) in the following proportions, calculated on the dry weight of titanium dioxide:-silicon 0.02-0.5 per cent (as SiO2), zirconium 0.1-2.0 per cent. (as ZrO2), thorium 0.05-1.0 per cent. (as ThO2). Preferred portions are 0.2-0.4 per cent for silicon, 0.5-1.0 per cent. for zirconium, and 0.1-0.5 per cent. for thorium. The elements may be added as their oxides or in the form of soluble compounds such as an alkali silicate (e.g. potassium silicate) or a salt of zirconium or thorium (e.g. thorium nitrate). Conventional conditioning agents such as potassium carbonate may also be added. Specifications 392,194, 499,153, and 517,742 also are referred to.
