A composite pigment comprises silica coated with lead oxide and titanium dioxide, the coating containing lead titanate; the proportions of the three oxides being represented by a point in an area of a tri-linear diagram bounded by straight lines joining the points: 38,6 Pb0-3,5 TiO2-57,9 SiO2 65,0 Pb0-5,0 TiO2-30,0 SiO2 55,8 Pb0-20,0 TiO2-24,2 SiO2 33,0 Pb0-20,0 TiO2-47,0 SiO2 the figures representing percentages by weight. It may be prepared by mixing, dry or in the form of an aqueous slurry, a compound giving rise to Pb0 on calcination, a compound giving rise to TiO2 on calcination, and a compound giving rise to SiO2 on calcination, and calcining the mixture preferably at 600 DEG -650 DEG C.
