Abstract

A composite emulsion is prepared by dispersing a toxic agent, e.g., copper oleate or dichlordiphenyl-trichlorethane, in molten pitch, molten bitumen, creosote to be added to the pitch, or in a flux of creosote and pitch, and dispersing this mixture with or without creosote in dilute aqueous alkaline solution in the presence of one or more assistant emulsifiers such as a natural asphalt, bentonite and protein, with or without fatty acid. In a modification the emulsion is made either by adding an aqueous dispersion of the toxic agent to an aqueous emulsion of bitumen or pitch with or without the presence of paraffin wax, or by adding a dispersion of the toxic agent in creosote to the aqueous bitumen or pitch emulsion. Paper possessing waterproofing and anti-mycetic properties may be prepared by incorporating the composite emulsion with the paper pulp. Examples are given.
