548,023. Bituminous emulsions. INTERNATIONAL BITUMEN EMULSIONS, Ltd., MONTGOMERIE, J. A., and ARCHIBALD, P. K. April 23, 1941, No. 5234. [Class 1 (i)] Molten bituminous material is mixed with a non-alkalinated saponifiable material, e.g. rosin, a small percentage of argillaceous material dispersed in water, and a smaller percentage of alkalinated protein material (casein, glue, gelatine, or albumen) or of saponified pinewood pitch, with alkali in sufficient quantity to neutralize at least partly the other ingredients. The mixture is then diluted with water, avoiding excessive temperature. The stability of the emulsion can be controlled by adding accelerators of breaking such as solvents for anthracenes or naphthalines or water-insoluble fatty acid salts.
