Abstract
577,459. Control systems for space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 15, 1943, No. 761.. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1942. [Class 38 (iv)] The starting of an electric discharge device, such as a fluorescent lamp 1, on alternating current, irrespective of the heating of its filamentary electrodes 2, is effected by a circuit which comprises a self-saturating reactor 8 in series with the lamp and a condenser 15 and non-saturating reactor 14 in shunt, so that when the lamp is not burning voltage peaks 24, Fig. 3, sufficient to start the lamp with cold electrodes are produced twice in each cycle due to resonance, and when the lamp is running resonance is prevented. In a modified arrangement in which the starting current passes through the electrode filaments, partially heating them, the elements 14, 15 are between the filaments and in series with them. The series reactor may have a core with a bridged air gap, or two reactors may be arranged in series, one of which has a closed magnetic circuit which saturates and the other a magnetic circuit with an air gap.
