Abstract

577,010. Machine guns. VIALE, S. M. May 30, 1941, No. 6965. [Class 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A buffer for use in machine, guns comprises a piston moving in a cylinder filled with liquid, the elasticity of which is utilized on recoil to absorb the shock of impact of a reciprocating part. The invention is shown applied to a buffer attached to the rear of a machine gun casing. The piston 11 slides in a cylinder 10 filled with liquid which is put under initial pressure to tighten the cup-rubber 15 by screwing in a plug 17. The forward movement of the piston is limited by a pin 13 engaging slots 14 in the cylinder. In the application to guns, the barrel extension engages the projections 12 and the breech-block engages a resilient facing 19 on the piston.
