Abstract
576,833. Aeronautical &c. compasses. WILSON, T. A. F. May 26, 1943, No. 8367. [Class 97 (ii)] A magnetic compass is mounted for rotation about its axis in an aeroplane or on a ship or other vehicle and means are provided for adjusting its angular position in azimuth according to magnetic variation and deviation at any particular moment. The compass is carried by a turntable d which carries a gear v which is rotated from a pair of spindles, one of which is rotated according to the magnetic variation and the other according to the deviation due to the aeroplane &c. As shown, the variation knob f is mounted on a spindle h coupled by pin n and slot k to a spindle L having a gear m in mesh with a gear o mounted on a spindle p. The latter carries a loose gear r in mesh with the gear v of the turntable and a gear s which is part of a differential gear, the planet gears u of which are carried by projections t of the loose gear r. A similar knob g is provided mounted on a spindle l<1> to apply angular movement in azimuth to the turntable d according to the magnetic deviation. Actuation of the knobs f, g applies differential rotation to the planet gears u and consequently to the turntable. The spindles l, l<1> are mounted for axial movement against springs z, z<1> and are provided with dogs x, x<1> co-operating with dogs y, y<1> so that the spindles l, l<1> are normally locked against operation and axial movement by the knobs /, g to the spindles l, l<1> is necessary before either of the latter can be operated..
