Abstract

489,232. Inclinometers for aircraft; gyroscopic apparatus. PHILLIPS, A. C., and KAPELLA, Ltd. Jan. 21, 1937, No. 1759. [Classes 97 (ii) and 97 (iii)] A pointer driven by a rate of turn responsive gyroscope and a second pointer under the combined control of the gyroscope and a lateral pendulum are arranged to move in the same direction and at the same speed when the aircraft is correctly banked during a turn. As shown, the pointer D<2>, having wings D3, is connected to the driven wheel D of a differential gear which includes a wheel C<5>, driven by the lateral pendulum C, and planet wheels B<8> in a frame B<7>, driven by the gyroscope B through the pin-and-slot connection B<5>, B<6>. The pointer E is driven from the frame B<7> through gearing E2, E,<3> E<4>, E<5>, so as to move at the same speed as the pointer D<2> when the pendulum remains stationary relatively to the outer casing A, i.e. when the aircraft is properly banked. Fore and aft inclination may be indicated by a pointer G<2> driven by a pendulum G through a pin-and-slot connection. In a modification, the pointer E and the wheel C<5> are driven directly by the gyroscope, and the frame B<7> carrying the planet wheels B<8> by the pendulum. The pointer D<2> is then driven from the wheel D through a reversing gear. In a further modification an epicyclic differential gear is used. In a further modification, Fig. 14, the pointer D<2> is pivoted on the pointer E at a point d displaced from the pivot e of the pointer E, which is driven directly by the gyroscope. The pendulum C pivoted at C<2> carries a pin d<2> which engages a slot d<1> in the pointer D<2> and normally coincides with the pivot e but displaces the pointer D<2> relatively to the pointer E when the pendulum moves relatively to the outer casing.
