Abstract
239,043. Rosenbaum, T. Aug. 30, 1924. Gyroscopic apparatus.- Apparatus for defining the vertical on aircraft &c. comprises a gyroscope d rotating around an horizontal axis within a frame e which is pivoted about a vertical axis in a frame b which is pendulously mounted about a horizontal axis c parallel to the longitudinal axis of the craft. The vertical pivot of the frame e carries an arm g provided with contacts o, p co-operating with contacts h - - l on the frame b to control a reversible motor m adapted when excited to exert torque about the axis c. The precession produced by inclination of the frame b about the axis c thus produces excitation of the motor which operates to anrml the inclination. A pointer f on the axis c indicates the vertical. An additional degree of freedom may be provided by pivoting the frame a about an horizontal axis r. Fig. 5, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the machine so that the axis c remains horizontal when the machine is longitudinally inclined. In this form a free pendulum may be suspended from the axis c to indicate the virtual vertical. Any departure of the machine from a straight course is then in. dicated by the divergence of the two pointers. The axis r may be connected by gearing t to a damping-vane &c. u.
