Gyroscopic apparatus.-Apparatus for indicating a fixed direction in altitude or in azimuth comprises a gyroscope system mounted in neutral equilibrium and a pendulous pivoted member, with means of a non-material character for coupling the gyroscope to the pendulous member at will. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for indicating the vertical, comprising a gyroscope 1 mounted on pivots 2 in a ring which is mounted on pivots 4 in a frame 5, the centre of gravity of the gyroscope being at the point of intersection of the pivot axes. The frame 5 is pendulously mounted in a ring 12 which is pivoted in a fixed support 11. The frame 5 is provided with an electromagnet 7 and the gyroscope with a soft iron member 6 so that when the magnet is excited the gyroscope, is coupled to the pendulous frame. Fig. 4 shows apparatus intended for use as a compass comprising three gyroscopes 21 (one not shown) mounted in a frame 20 with their horizontal axes of rotation inclined at 120‹ to each other. The frame 20 is provided with a pivot 25 by which it is supported on a post 27 carried by the gimballed pendulous frame 28, the centre of gravity of the gyroscope system coinciding with the pivot. Pneumatic means are employed to couple the frame 20 to the frame 28, the latter being provided with a ring 30 having nozzles 31 and the frame 20 being formed with a conical surface 26 on which air under pressure discharged through the nozzles 31 impinges.
