Abstract

854,506. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. March 13, 1957 [March 13, 1956], No. 7894/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 97(3) [Also in Group XXXV] In a gyroscopic navigation system for aircraft, of the type described in Specification 826,418, the electric outputs from gyrostabilised accelerometers are employed to precess the gyroscopes so as to maintain them aligned with local horizontal axes as the craft progresses round the earth. The precessional forces are applied from a gimbal mounted platform having three degrees of freedom, about mutually perpendicular axes, automatically controlled so as to maintain alignment between the gyroscopes and the platform. In Specification 826,418 one gyroscope has a vertical spin axis to provide the vertical reference while in the present system the axes of the gyroscopes are horizontal and the vertical reference is perpendicular to the gyroscope-axes. As in Specification 826,418, displacements' between the gyro rotor casings and the supporting platform are measured bv pick-offs which provide controlling signals for servo-motors controlling the supporting gimbols to maintain the platform aligned to the gyroscopes. Each gyroscope is also subjected to precessional forces from torque motors energised from accelerometers mounted on the nlatform. Specifications 804,849, 826,417 and 826,421 also are referred to.
