Abstract

609,909. Attitude-indicators for aircraft. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 25, 1946, No. 9142. Convention date, March 28, 1945. [Class 4] An attitude - indicating instrument has an indicator in the form of a miniature threedimensional airplane which moves with reference to a back-ground member in response to pitch-and-bank movements of the aircraft. A case 1 with a face-plate 2 for mounting the instrument in a panel contains a shaft 8, mounted in bearings to carry the miniature airplane 4 balanced to occupy a level flightposition from which it can be readily moved by an applied force. A hemi-spherical background member 5 marked with a horizon line 6 and with circles indicating pitch angles.contains the miniature 4 and is stabilised about the roll-axis D-D by being carried on the outer gimbal 16 of the mounting for a vertical axis gyroscope 14; when banking occurs the miniature 4 turns with respect to the horizon line 6 to show the banking. When the aircraft climbs or dives a magnet 23 on gyro 14, and which normally co-operates with a magnet 24 on the miniature to hold it central of the pitch-angle circles, is moved above or below magnet 24 and causes the miniature to be inclined correspondingly.
